Smurfette was created by evil wizard Gargamel, the SmurfsвЂ™ enemy, in order to spy on them and sow jealousy. His conflict with the Smurfs When Gargamel first appeared in Le Voleur de schtroumpf (вЂњThe SmurfnapperвЂќ), published in 1959, he captured a Smurf, which he needed as an ingredient for a potion to make gold in accordance with the famed alchemic legend of the PhilosopherвЂ™s Stone. Gargamel also has a desire to eat and/ or destroy the smurfs mainly from not being able to catch them. The reason heвЂ™s trying to catch them is he needs them to turn base metal into gold. Gargamel hates the Smurfs because, He can not catch them no matter how hard he tries.

There were originally 99 Smurfs, but this number increased as new Smurf characters appeared, such as Sassette and Nanny.
